It's time

Robyn Archer is one of that select band of baby boomers who have always had a gold key to the ABC. It must be Old Mates Week because I've heard her on RN either sing or be interviewed about 6 times in the past 36 hours. Must have a new book out or something. Auntie should either give these Whitlam-era true believers a wage or charge them rent.

Charge them rent...the problem with many baby boomer "cultural commentators" (not all...there are some god ones at RN) is that they haven't exposed themselves to a new idea in years...they fought the cultural cringe - a good thing - by looking outwards, analysing what was happening in the really exciting places o/s and with that inspiration created local ideas and movements...then they stopped looking outwards, their ideas crystalised and they started thinking Australia was Paris (it is still a backwater). Younger people (and not just them) hear the cobwebs in their smug, boring "analysis"...but of course...RN in particular isn't hiring new blood these days. No room.

This is what really bugs me too. If it's always Clive James, Mungo McCallum, Michael Leunig etc etc, and that bloke whose name I can't remember who seems to get trotted at every opportunity ... the guy who was a 'This Day Tonight' journo, I think, about 100 years ago, and did memoirs about working in Tazzie, etc ... Tim Bowden!!! that's his name! ... then young, fresh ideas are blocked. It's a shocking old boys and girls network they run there.
